Why Cavan Is Tops For Fishing Holidays Ireland!

9 November 2010. Categories: Uncategorized

With its abundance of lakes and moderate weather, Ireland is an ideal location for the avid and casual angler alike.  Cavan fishing trips have proven popular with both Irish and International holidaymakers.  Coarse fishing or freshwater fishing is the most popular throughout Belturbet and Cavan.

Riverrun Sports & Wildlife Reserve in Belturbet, County Cavan is an idyllic location for an angling holiday.  The development is positioned on the banks of the Shannon Erne waterway.  There are on-site moorings available to rent or several outlets for boat rental.  Though, many guests have had a great day’s fishing right off the jetties located inside the development!

Whether you are a beginner or a keen fisherman, there are also several local popular fishing locations in Cavan waiting to be explored.  A full map of local angling sites can be found at http://www.cavantourism.com/downloads/Cavan_Angling_Map.pdf.

If looking for a stock of Bream or Roach you should seek out wider stretches of river or large lakes.  Ideal spots in Cavan would be Gowna, Oughter, Sillan, Upper Erne, McNean and Ramor.  If you choose one of Cavan’s smaller secluded lakes you will most likely find a stock of large Tench, Bream and Pike.

If competitive fishing interests you there are several angling festivals held throughout Cavan.  This year’s events are located in nearby Cootehill or Lisnaskea.  Details for these events can be found on the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (N.C.F.F.I.) Calendar of Events at http://www.ncffi.ie/fishing_matches.php.

With its 365 lakes for every day of the year, Cavan is the perfect angling holiday location.   As no licence or fee is required to enjoy coarse fishing in County Cavan there is nothing stopping you from trying your hand at a spot of angling!
